Celebrating Hispanic heritage month

Torres, who finds passion in teaching art, was born in Puerto Rico and now resides in Shreveport. Her art has a unique perspective, as it is deeply rooted in her childhood experiences by the Atlantic Ocean. Her paintings beautifully capture the essence of the Caribbean, reflecting the vivid colors, textures, and memories of her upbringing.

Torres believes art education is important for both, children and adults.

“Because of the art, we can see how a kid has a problem. Through the art, that can help like therapy. Through the art, a kid can see that he has a talent, and he can develop that art. Through the art, we can know more about our culture. Where we are from, who we are. Art isn’t something simple, no. Since we are born, until we are dead, art is in our lives,” says Torres. “Almost everything in our lives is about art.”

When speaking about her art, which often features red cows with wings, Torres describes her goals when creating her work.

“It’s about my experiences in life. I try to communicate a message. I want when you see my paintings, it’s not just ‘Oh, I like it’ or ‘I like the color because it matches my sofa’, please never say that. I want you to say ‘There is something about that painting that makes me feel good,’ says Torres. “I want my paintings to be more than a painting. I want it to have a value, an interpretation, a message. It’s something you’re going to put inside your house, so it should be something that brings you education, bring you peace, or something good. That’s what I try.”
